who. what. why. where. how.
WHO: I am a dancer, performer, choreographer, actress, aerialist, athlete, equestrian, teacher, coach and trainer. I am an artist and a student of life. I am always learning, searching, redefining, going, arriving, admiring, aging, aspiring, and daydreaming.
WHAT: I create movement and share stories by using the body as an instrument of power and expression. I am committed to making compelling works of performance art that engage, inspire and transform audience and performers alike. WHY: My desire to dance began at a very early age. At five years old I decided this dance thing, was what I was going to do. When I am moving, flying, hurling my body through space I feel whole - everything about who I am magically falls into place and the world makes some kind of sense. I have this same feeling when I teach. I love helping people conquer a physical feat they decided was impossible. When I started out, I had no idea that being a teacher and a trainer would become such a big part of my life; but witnessing people discovering their own courage and the intelligence of their bodies is a daily gift that never gets old.
I have learned lots of unexpected things along the way. As I grew as a dancer and a performer, studying under incredible directors, I discovered I was also a choreographer. I began to have a voice as a artist. My intention is to make work that engages self-reflection, both of myself and of my audience. I want my audience to intensely experience both their thinking selves and their emotional selves at the same time, and how the complexity of that unique ability makes us all brilliantly, tragically human. As the Artistic Director / Choreographer of KAIROS Dance Theater (since 2005) I have developed a commitment to cultural competency. I strive to utilize art as a threshold to speak to social issues and work towards rewriting culturally defined narratives. I bring together artists from all disciplines to collaborate on expressing ideas in innovative ways. Often these ideas are centered aroundwomen’s stories and experiences, offering audiences a narrative journey that weaves together powerful images that demonstrate the varied and powerful pathways that women walk as they relate to each other and their world.
