platform choreographed & performed by DeAnna Pellecchia
music arranged & performed by Matt Samolis
Originally designed for the stage, PLATFORM can be adapted to any performance space and includes a series of movement structures both set and improvisational which take place in, on and around dozens of platform shoes. The solo addresses the socio-political "platforms" of our time. Adorned in red, white and blue DeAnna incorporates strong visual imagery with sharp, disjointed choreography to comment on the personal choices we as Americans make on a daily basis. Matt Samolis accompanies on tenor banjo with a mash up of Americana from different genres and styles. PLATFORM premiered at Boston University and was presented as part of "Politics of Shoes" at Mobius, Boston.
doll choreographed & performed by DeAnna Pellecchia music arranged & performed by Matt Samolis
Set to an original banjo score by Boston-based musician Matt Samolis, better known as 'Shoe', DOLL was presented at Outside Art Collective's 'Vroom, Vroom, Vaudeville' held at the legendary Middle East in Central Square, Cambridge. Complete with plaid skirt and red circles for cheeks, the sweet, innocent 'doll' begins tap dancing 'Shirley Temple' style as the banjo correspondingly plays even-tempo cords. As the piece progresses the music shifts from docile to crazy, and so does the tap dancer. The doll image is shattered and the audience is left in hysterics as the 'good--ship' tap dancer becomes a slam-dancing psycho.
Matt Samolis has been working in sonic and visual mediums since 1987. He began studying flute, and later composition and tenor banjo. He has worked with ensembles at New England Conservatory, Brandeis University, Berklee, and Tufts, as well as Open Hand Theatre, Pilgrim Research Collaborative, Mobius, Roy Hart Theatre, and numerous other projects. Currently, his primary focus is as a composer, and as flutist with various local performance groups and his drone alliance, The Metal & Glass Ensemble. He is also found about town practicing freelance photography.
